Every so often there's a song or an album that comes along and leaves a lasting mark on you. Sometimes the reasons are obvious... the songs feel like they're written about you, or just for you. Other times the music can speak to you in ways a conversation can't.
We all have at least one album that carries with us wherever we go, for the rest of our lives.
In June I wrote a piece for my "Impressions..." article on afterhoursradio.org about John Velghe & The Prodigal Sons album "Don't Let Me Stay" in which I compared it to Pete Yorn's "Musicforthemorningafter". Both of those albums gave me a feeling of longing to be else where, to live life as an adventure. Albums like that, the kind that inspire me to do things, or to see things or learn things will always hold a special spot with me.
But! I'm curious... What albums have left an Impression on you? What are the albums that no matter how scratched the CD gets, or how warped the vinyl is... or how many times you've had to re-download it, it will always stick with you?
Feel free to tweet me your favorite albums, Pictures of the physical copies would be cool too!!!

SUMMER SOUNDTRACK 2012
SUMMER SOUNDTRACK 2012
Night Moves — Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
Number one, if the instrumentation of this song doesn’t welcome cool summer breeze and hand painted sunset skies only found in nostalgic memory you have no soul. Number two, if this doesn’t remind you of at least one romantic relationship in your life, you need to date more.

Alright Night — The Bosben BrothersThis Minneapolis duo may have my bid for best new summer song of 2012. It’s acoustic breakdown of all things happy while keeping it bluegrass pickin’ cool works well with these HOT Wisconsin days, cuz it’s gonna be an alright right night. Cool.
Mama Told Me Not To Come — Three Dog Night
We’ve All Had Those Kind Of Summer Nights
We’ve All Had Those Kind Of Summer Nights
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant — Billy Joel
Summer always offers up at least one reunion of some sort. Be it an old friend or lover, or a family or class reunion, this is the perfect narrative for every conversation you never want to have but always do. And some how, always end up feeling better about yourself afterwards.

Here Comes The Sun — The Beatles
I could start every summer morning at 5:00am with cup of coffee and this Harrison masterpiece.

All My Best Friends Are Metal Heads — Less Than Jake
The skateboarding anthem of every summer since age 15 as far as I’m concerned. This ska/punk jam makes me want to let loose and and be juvenile in the sun all day, whether on a skateboard, a beach, road tripping or sipping a brewskie at a backyard bbq, I’m game, crank it up!

Summer Girls — LFO
If you know this song, there’s no explanation needed. If you don’t, well then put aside your hatred for boybands and sing along.
Summer Time — Mungo Jerry
Ch-Ch-Ch-UH Ch-Ch-Ch-UH In The Summer Time When The Weather Is Fine…
This tune keeps your feet tappin and your mouth singing, even if all you know is the Ch-Ch-Ch-UHs you’ve got the most important part, so turn it up and enjoy the summer!
Do You Feel Like I Do — Peter Frampton
The best thirteen minutes of your life could take place during this song. At a fair, a concert, a wedding, a beach, it doesn’t matter when this diddy starts playing. Turn it up and enjoy the talking guitar, or keep it in the background as the score to your summer drunken heart-to-hearts.

Schools Out — Alice CooperEvery summer since I was in sixth grade I remember walking off of the school grounds and instantly hearing someone blaring this Alice Cooper jam. Obviously it’s been played in many a record player, cassette deck and eight-track player before my sixth grade year, which just shows why this song deserves a spot the list. Everyone needs a song to let loose to after months on end of being in a fluorescent lit educational cage.
Born To Be Wild — Steppenwolf
As soon as the song opens I think of strong wind through a car window, long stretch of North Highway 53 between Rice Lake, WI and Duluth, MN and of course a clear unending sky just begging for me and my company to chase it. Everytime.

Take It Easy — The Eagles
Much like “Born To Be Wild” this song makes me think of a long stretch of highway, this time my company being seven women and a flatbed Ford. Lighten your load, and leave the world of trouble off your mind, let’s take it easy this summer!
Summertime — Will Smith & DJ Jazzy JeffI don’t know about you, but every time the first note hits, I know it’s on! Big Willie Style.
Funkytown — Lipps Inc“Won’t You Take Me To… Funkytoowwn” from high school dances at the skating rink, to outside of burger joints, this song that just barely missed the disco-age but helped usher in the techno-pop of the 80s still makes me want to groove every time it comes on. Especially on a hot summer night… at a wedding, or renuion…

Love Shack - B52s
Summer just wouldn’t be complete with out at least one visit the the “Shack” be it the original being pumped out by a dj, or a cover a bar, Love Shack remains on the Summer Soundtrack for it’s ability to make anyone forget their age and shout out about large whale like cars… and their backseats…\

Paradise By The Dashboard Light — Meatloaf
Speaking of backseats… throw this on, take out your favorite girl head down to the lake at dusk and watch the submarine races… you’ll remember why this needs to be on the soundtrack

No Doubt and Matchbox Twenty (Videos)
This last week I filled in as the morning guy on Star97's Morning Cruise with Michael J. It was the first week of mornings I've worked in... well a really long time. I will be doing mornings the rest of this month, but on a different radio show, The Big Show on WJMC-FM Rice Lake. That's another story.
While filling in for the Morning Cruise I noticed a trend in today's pop culture...
It hasn't changed in at least ten years.
Britney and Christina are still not in favor of each other (the Rivalry Continues...! Google Britney, Christina, TMZ if you care enough :) )
and the best new music being pushed is No Doubt and Matchbox Twenty and Alanis Morrisette... now if only Sugar Ray can get their stuff together we'll be doing alright... Maybe not.
In all honesty it's been a treat digging into the more "main stream" side of things. Usually I'm all about local, independent music (which I still am! No worries), but hearing the new singles and watching the videos put me in a happy place... I hope it does for you as well... here's the video for No Doubt's new single "Settle Down" (which I was happy to see is true to the No Doubt style...) and Matchbox Twenty's "She's So Mean".

After Hours Radio (taken from afterhoursradio.org)
My name is Ryan Quinn. I am one of three hosts of After Hours Radio.
Let me first say, it is truly exciting to find you here! AHR started in
October of 2011 out of my desire to try something new and get a little
more practice with radio. I graduated from Brown College in March of
2010 and soon found myself engulfed in the music scene back in my
hometown of Rice Lake, WI. The show started out as a half hour
featuring the music of the Midwest along with interviews with only Mike
Kelly and myself as the hosts on BlogTalkRadio.com. On November 23rd
2011, we held our first “public event” at the Silver Dollar Saloon in
Rice Lake, inviting Steve Nagel, Cait Leary, Seth Gamble, Mike Kelly and Andy Nelson to perform. What a night! If you get a chance to hear the audio, do it. You never will. But if you get a chance…
We debuted on ErrorFM.com on December 4th, 2011 following a performance by Deep Run and Voodoo, broadcasting live for the first time ever out of Badger Brew Express. At the end of that month we went back to the Silver Dollar Saloon, this time broadcasting the performances of The Adam Hutton, Andy Nelson, Jason Dirkes, Voodoo and more live for 5 hours ringing in the New Year. (Twice! Once in Rice Lake, WI and Once in L.A. for the folks on ErrorFM).
Since then we’ve talked with some amazing artists. Both planned and unplanned. In April of 2012 Andy Nelson called me about a half hour before we were to go live to tell me that he had run into this rapper from Texas and wanted to know if we could put him on the show. I told him to bring him on down thinking it was going to be some scrawny punk pushing a laptop mixtape. I was wrong. Andy brought us Playdough. He had just finished up with a show and was at the hotel Andy was working at, so he came and gave us his “Hotdoggin’” album. In my excitement of how cool this guy seemed I totally forgot to press the record button for the first ten minutes of the show, missing our intro, Playdough’s song “Rhymer Reason” and the Playdough interview. Luckily he was nice enough to stay past 1am to re-record the interview, which is what you will hear if you listen to the 4/22 AHR podcast. Admittedly it may have been “The Show” that lent it’s hand in the rookie mistakes, but thank God Playdough was understanding.
We’ve made plenty more mistakes, but we’ve learned a even more along the way, and I can’t wait to take in more. Personally, what I am most excited about for the coming year is watching the artists that were releasing their debut EPs, full albums or were just starting work on new projects when we started last October, start the next chapter in their journey. This fall will be exciting. With Rice Lake native Austin Nivarel recording work for his new album, Cait Leary also prepping for her next release, and a new West of Aldine release this fall as well, we can expect more goodness from “The Best Of The Midwest”, along with staying up to date with our friends in Texas, Los Angeles, Seattle, Kansas City and all points in-between! There’s a lot to hear, and we hope to share it all with you!
